EKU Defeats In-State Rival Northern Kentucky

Ashley Edmond led Eastern with 20 kills and eight blocks.

RICHMOND, Ky. –
The Eastern Kentucky University volleyball team defeated Northern Kentucky University 3-1 Tuesday at McBrayer Arena.

EKU won by scores of 25-19, 25-16, 23-25, and 25-16. 

Eastern (12-12, 4-4 OVC) had 23 kills on 42 attempts, recording a .381 attack percentage, while holding the Norse to .237 in the first set. The Colonels led by as many as six points, before the Norse (8-14, 3-7 A-Sun) rallied back to within three to make the score 22-19 late in the match.

Eastern Kentucky went on to take the set over NKU, 25-19. Senior, Ashley Edmond recorded three late kills to push the Colonels over the Norse. 

Edmond led the team in points recording ten, also making nine kills to lead the Colonels in the first set.

EKU hit .243 in the second set, as NKU took an early lead over Eastern, 5-0. The Colonels gained momentum mid-match compliments to sophomore Rachel Vick recording three more kills and senior Marissa Tashenberg with two kills.

Edmond continued to dominate adding five more kills and scoring a total 17.5 points. EKU controlled the remainder of the set to give the Colonels a 25-16 win in the second.

The third set saw a thrilling battle back by the Norse. The Colonels led by as many as eight points. The set saw four ties, with the last one coming at 23 apiece. Following an attack error by Edmond, then an exciting service ace by redshirt freshman Taylor Snyder, pushed NKU over the Colonels, 25-23 to send the match into a fourth set.

EKU went on to lead the majority of the fourth and final set. The match point was won on a service ace by junior Dena Ott giving the Colonels the set, 25-16.

Edmond was the match leader with 20 kills, eight blocks and 24.5 points. Vick was second best with 16 kills and 18 points.  Abbey Cvelbar had 50 assists and Ott contributed 23 digs.

Eastern out-blocked Northern 11-5.

Sophomore, Julian Jayden led the Norse with 12 kills and 12 points.

The Colonels will travel to Cape Girardeau, Mo., to take on OVC opponent Southeast Missouri State University Thursday. The match is set for 7 p.m.
