CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – After falling behind 2-0, the Eastern Kentucky volleyball team rallied to tie the match, but ultimately fell 3-2 at Southeast Missouri on Thursday. The loss snapped Eastern's five-match winning streak.
SEMO won by scores of 25-15, 25-18, 22-25, 20-25 and 15-9. EKU fell to 12-13 overall and 4-5 in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Sophomore
Rachel Vick led the Colonel offensive attack. She finished with a match-best 16 kills and a team-high three blocks. She made only three errors in 37 attacks for a .351 hitting percentage.
Dena Ott contributed a match-high 24 digs for Eastern Kentucky.
Ashley Edmond added 15 kills and Alexis Plagens finished with 14.
Abbey Cvelbar recorded 51 assists for the Colonels.
Andrea Baylin led the Redhawks (13-11, 5-4 OVC) with 15 kills and also added 16 digs. Taylor Masterson posted 12 kills and made only one error for a .611 attack percentage.
As a team, the Colonels committed 10 service errors and were out-blocked 8-4. SEMO hit .246 compared to .155 for EKU.
Trailing 2-0 in the match and 12-11 in the third set, Eastern went on an 8-3 run to build a four-point cushion, 19-15. The Colonels had a 23-22 lead when Plagens recorded a kill. The set ended moments later on a SEMO attack error.
EKU had a two-point lead, 21-19, in the fourth set when Edmond put away a kill and then served up an ace. Vick followed with a kill to reach set-point, 24-19. After Southeast scored a point, the set ended on a Redhawk attack error.
Kills by
Johanna Boyer and Plagens, followed by a SEMO error put the visitors in front 6-3 in the decisive fifth set. However, the Redhawks answered with an 8-1 run to take control. Three straight EKU errors ended the set and the match.
The Colonels play at Tennessee-Martin on Friday. The match is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. ET.
