Colonels Begin 5-Match Home Stand With Win Over SEMO

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky's volleyball team began a five-match home stand with a 3-1 victory over Southeast Missouri State on Friday at McBrayer Arena.

Set scores were 25-12, 14-25, 25-14 and 25-18.

Junior Rachel Vick posted a match-best 13 kills for Eastern (14-7, 4-1 OVC).  She made just three errors in 27 attempts for a .370 attack percentage.  Abbey Cvelbar finished with a match-high 40 assists and Dena Ott led all players with 30 digs.

The Colonels had 19 more kills (49-30) and out-hit the Redhawks .155 to .065.  Nine service errors slightly slowed the EKU offensive attack.

Kelsey Keeve led Southeast Missouri (6-12, 1-4 OVC) with seven kills.

Eastern Kentucky jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first set and cruised to a 13-point victory.  Kills by Alexis Plagens and Ally Peters finished off the opening set.  Southeast Missouri trailed by one, 7-6, in the second set before using a 12-4 run to take control.  A kill by Andrea Baylin and an Eastern attack error ended the set and tied the match 1-1.

Much like they did in the first set, the Colonels took advantage early in the third by jumping out to a 12-3 lead.  Celina Sanks put the finishing touches on a 25-14 victory with a kill.

The fourth set was close early, seeing eight ties and four lead changes.  However, EKU took the lead for good on an ace by Cvelbar that began an 8-1 run for the home team.  An ace by Peters and a kill by Ciera Koons finished off the run and put Eastern in front 18-11.  Southeast closed the gap to five, 23-18, late on a kill by Keeve and an EKU error, but a Redhawk ball handling error and a kill from Peters finished off the match.

The Colonels continue a stretch of five straight at home on Saturday against Tennessee-Martin.  The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
