RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team fell to first-place SIUE, 3-1, on Senior Day at EKU Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon.
Five Colonel seniors –
Kaylynn Brown,
Paige Larkin,
Ashley Ryan,
Devon Saini and
Whitney Wallace – were honored before the game.
With the win, SIUE improves to an Ohio Valley Conference-best 9-5-1 (6-1-0 OVC) on the year. The loss drops EKU to 3-13-1 (1-6-1 OVC).
"SIUE is a good team, which is why there are in first place," head coach
Melissa Barnes said. "We created enough dangerous chances today to win the game, but did not convert them. We will work hard this week to prepare to play EIU on Friday at home."
The Cougars took the lead in the 13
th minute when Emily Grahl lofted a pass over the EKU defense to Michelle Auer, who drew freshman goalkeeper
Anna Hall out of the net and fired a shot past her to make it 1-0.
EKU evened in the 28
th minute, however, when junior
Mikala Ferguson connected with sophomore
Cassie Smith, who outraced an SIUE defender and sent a beautiful strike past Cougars keeper Jennifer Pelley for the equalizer. The goal was Smith's team-best sixth of the season.
SIUE's response was quick, though, as Katye Skrivan scored on a corner kick three minutes later to give the Cougars a lead it would hold.
Carolina Hoefert headed in an insurance goal in the 76
th minute.
SIUE outshot EKU, 11-6, on the day. The Colonels, however, attempted eight shots to the Cougars' five in the second half.

Mikayla Brillon played all 90 minutes on EKU's backline in Sunday's defeat. Smith also went the distance up front for the Colonels.
Hall made eight stops in goal for EKU.
The Colonels return to action on Friday, Oct. 24, when they host Eastern Illinois at 1:00 p.m.
