Bombs Away, EKU Hosts ETSU Tuesday

RICHMOND, Ky. – Two teams that combine for nearly 60 three-point attempts per game will meet on Tuesday when Eastern Kentucky hosts East Tennessee State. 
 
The game will start at 7 p.m.  The live radio broadcast of Wednesday's game is available in the Richmond area on WCYO 100.7 FM, and can be heard worldwide on EKUSports.com.  A live video broadcast is available on OVCDigitalNetwork.com.
 
Both teams average 29 three-point attempts per game.  ETSU (5-2) is fourth in the nation with 11.9 made three's per game, EKU is ninth with 9.9 per game.  East Tennessee shoots 41 percent from three-point range, while Eastern Kentucky (5-3) has made only 34 percent from deep this season.  However, the Colonels have held their two previous opponents to a combined 28 percent shooting from behind the arc.
 
The Colonels are second in the nation with an average of 12.3 steals per game and second in turnover margin (+11.9), but East Tennessee has turned the ball over only 10.4 times per game (11th fewest in the country) and its opponents are averaging only 4.1 steals.
 
The game also features a match-up of two finalists for the Lou Henson Award, which is presented annually to the Division I "Mid-Major" Player of the Year.  Eastern's Corey Walden and ETSU's Rashawn Rembert are both on the list.  Both guards are from Florida and both joined their respective school's 1,000 point club this season.  Walden (Daytona Beach) did it at Southern Utah (Nov. 26).  Rembert (Tampa) did it on Saturday against UNC Greensboro.
 
Eastern Kentucky is 31-4 in its last 35 home games.
 
In its last game, EKU used a 27-7 run to start the second half to break open a close game and beat IUPUI, 73-64, on Saturday.  Walden scored a game-high 20 points for the Colonels he also had seven rebounds, six assists and four steals.  Eric Stutz added 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting and five rebounds.  He became the 27th player in program history to grab 500 career rebounds.
 
The Colonels shot 55 percent from the field in the win.
 
The Buccaneers are averaging 84.6 points per game, 10th best in the nation.  ETSU shoots 42.5 percent from the field.  Forty-six percent of the Buccaneers shots have come from three-point range.
 
The trio of Jalen Riley, Rembert, and Lester Wilson make the ETSU offense go.  Those three have taken 171 of the team's 202 three-point attempts.  Riley, a 6-foot senior guard, has hit 48 percent of his three-pointers (24-of-50) and averages 22 points per game.  He's gotten to the free throw line a team-high 66 times.  Rembert, a 6-foot-3 senior guard, has shot 43 percent from the field and contributes 16.1 points per contest.  Wilson, a 6-foot-4 215-pound junior forward, has knocked down 45 percent from the field and 43 percent from deep.  He averages 14.1 points and four rebounds. 
 
Ron Giplaye, a 6-foot-6, 250-pound senior forward suffered a season-ending injury in practice last week.  He was leading the team in rebounding (7.0 rpg) and scoring 4.5 points per game.
 
EKU and East Tennessee have both lost to Valparaiso.  ETSU fell by 14 on the road while the Colonels lost by six at home.  The Buccaneers lost to UNC Greensboro, 80-79, on Saturday.  East Tennessee shot 37 percent from the field but allowed UNCG to shoot 50 percent.  ETSU made 11-of-32 from three-point range for 34 percent.
