RICHMOND, Ky. – In a key Ohio Valley Conference match-up on ESPNU, Angelo Warner posted a career-high 33 points to lead visiting Morehead State to an 86-79 victory over Eastern Kentucky on Saturday.
The Eagles (16-9, 7-3 OVC) shot 58.3 percent (28-of-48) from the floor, their best shooting day of the season against an OVC opponent. Morehead State's 86 points were also the most scored against the Colonels (17-8, 7-4) this year.
There were six ties and eight lead changes in a very competitive first half that saw the Eagles take a 36-35 lead into halftime.
Early in the second half, EKU pulled ahead by one point on two occasions only to see Morehead State put together a 7-0 spurt to go ahead 50-42. The Eagles never looked back as the visitors shot 59.1 percent (13-of-22) after intermission compared to just 40 percent (12-of-30) by the Colonels.
Eastern sliced the deficit to four points with 9:54 remaining, but could get no closer. Warner hit a key three-pointer with the shot clock winding down to give Morehead State a nine-point edge, 69-60, with 5:45 left.
Thirty-three personal fouls were called in the final 20 minutes and each team went to the charity stripe more than 20 times. Morehead State netted 21-of-26 (80.8 percent) free throws to keep Eastern at bay.
Warner's previous career high was 25 points. He hit 10-of-15 (66.7 percent) shots from the floor and all 10 of his free throw attempts. Chad Posthumus came off the bench to pull down a game-high 13 rebounds.
For the Colonels, senior
Glenn Cosey led the way with 18 points. However, the OVC's leading three-point shooter was held to just 1-of-5 (20 percent) shooting from behind the arc. Junior
Corey Walden chipped in with 12 points and a team-best eight boards.
Morehead State's win broke a three-game losing streak to Eastern Kentucky, including a 76-65 defeat earlier this season in Morehead.
The Colonels hit the road for their next three games starting with Tennessee Tech on Thursday, Feb. 13. Game time is set for 8 p.m. ET.
NOTES
Eastern Kentucky has the second-best turnover margin in the nation (+7.0), and finished with eight fewer turnovers than Morehead State on Saturday.
Entering the game, the Colonels had committed 199 fewer turnovers and out-scored their opponents by 268 points off turnovers (515-282). On Satuday against Morehead State, Eastern had eight fewer turnovers and out-scored the Eagles 21-10 off turnovers.
Eastern's Corey Walden had seven steals combined in his team's previous two games. He had three steals on Saturday against Morehead. Walden entered the game ranked 22nd in the nation in steals.
EKU entered the game fourth in the nation in steals (220) and seventh with an average of 9.2 per game. The Colonels had eight steals on Saturday against Morehead State.
EKU entered the game third in the OVC in scoring (78.7 ppg) and second in scoring defense (69.8 ppg).
Eastern Kentucky is 26-3 in its last 29 home games.
