Volleyball Claims Fifth Straight OVC Win

Box Score

NASHVILLE, Tenn. –
With a 3-1 win over Tennessee State University Friday at Kean Hall, the EKU volleyball team extended its Ohio Valley Conference winning streak to five.

Eastern won by scores of 25-20, 13-25, 25-23 and 27-25.

Tied at 15 in the first set, the Colonels began to pull away. Celina Sanks dropped two of her game-high 15 kills to help put the Colonels up 18-15. From there, the Colonels outscored Tennessee State 7-5 to claim the first set.

Tennessee State controlled the second set, however. The Tigers led throughout, hitting .324 to even the match at one apiece.

In the final two sets, Eastern had to overcome late leads from the Tigers. As the Colonels trailed 22-21, EKU used a 4-0 run to close the set heading into the potential deciding set.

The Colonels jumped out to an 11-5 lead and maintained the lead throughout the set until Tennessee State took an 18-17 lead. The teams traded leads over the next few points as the Tigers held the serve at match-point. With an opportune use of a timeout, the Colonels closed the set with three straight points to take the match.

Sanks hit .196 on the night finishing with 15 kills, nine digs and three blocks. Ally Peters logged 11 kills, along with four service aces and seven digs for the Colonels. Johanna Boyer and Rachel Vick added eight kills apiece in the win.

The Colonels return to OVC action Saturday as they take on Belmont University. Saturday's match is scheduled 5 p.m. ET.
