Colonels Drop Series Finale At Morehead State

Box Score

MOREHEAD, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky lost the series finale at Morehead State, 20-6, on Sunday.

Back-to-back RBI singles by Ryan Kent and Kane Sweeney in the second inning gave Morehead State a 3-0 lead.  Freshman Brendan Cutting got EKU on the board with a solo home run in the third, his second of the season.  However, Sweeney hit a three-run shot of his own in the fourth to push the Eagles in front 7-1.

The Colonels (7-16, 2-6 OVC) closed the gap in the fifth.  TJ Alas drove in a run with a single to right center.  Mandy Alvarez followed with his fourth home run of the series, and sixth of the season.  His two-run shot over the wall in center made it a 7-4 game.

Alas and Alvarez each had three hits.  Alas was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI.  Alvarez hit his fifth home run of the series in the top of the seventh, a two-run shot over the wall in left field.  He went 3-for-5 with two runs and four RBIs.

The Eagles (13-13, 5-7 OVC) answered with five runs in the bottom half of the fifth to essentially put the game away.

Sweeney finished 3-for-5 with a walk, two runs and six RBIs.  Kent went 2-for-4 with two walks, two runs and two driven in.  Four others contributed three hits each to MSU's 23-hit day.

The Colonels will play Northern Kentucky at home on Tuesday.  First pitch at Turkey Hughes Field is scheduled for 6 p.m.
