EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – A ninth inning run doomed Eastern Kentucky in a 4-3 loss at Southern Illinois Edwardsville on Friday.
With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth, SIUE (11-15, 11-6 OVC) put runners at first and second with one out. A ground ball got the Colonels (10-19, 4-8 OVC) within one out of going to extra innings, but it also moved the runners into scoring position. The first pitch to Chase Greene got by the catcher and Nick Lombardo scored the winning run from third base.
The late-game run negated a strong performance by EKU starter
Logan Hershenow. The senior tossed a season-high eight innings, allowed three runs on 11 hits, walked one and struck out three.
Junior
Kyle Nowlin staked the Colonels to an early 1-0 lead when he hit his OVC-leading 10th home run of the season in the first inning.
Doug Teegarden's RBI double in the fourth tied the score 2-2. Eastern took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth on
Ben Fisher's lead-off solo home run.
SIU Edwardsville tied the score 3-3 on Dustin Woodcock's RBI single up the middle in the bottom half of the sixth.
Teegarden hit first in the lineup and finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Mandy Alvarez also had two hits. Nowlin went 1-for-4 with a walk.
Game two of the series is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. ET in Edwardsville, Illinois.
