RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team dropped a close game to Jacksonville State Friday night, 7-5.
The Colonels took the lead in the first when
Kyle Nowlin scored on a throwing error. EKU added two more runs in the third on RBI singles from
TJ Alas and
Shea Sullivan.
JSU used a double from Paschal Petrongolo, a sacrifice fly from Ryan Sebra, and a triple from Elliot McCummings to tie the game in the top of the fourth. Then the Gamecocks used a two run fifth to take the lead, highlighted by a double from Clayton Daniel and a single from Petrongolo.
EKU chipped away at the lead with a
Logan Starnes RBI single in the sixth but JSU responded with a run off of a Daniel double in the top of the seventh.
Mandy Alvarez struck back with a home run in the bottom of the seventh. Daniel added an insurance run in the top of the ninth with an RBI single
Daniel led the way for the Gamecocks (24-21, 11-11 OVC) with three RBIs on as many hits. Petrongolo chipped in a pair of RBIs on two hits as well. Alas picked up three hits and one RBI for the Colonels (17-25, 8-13 OVC).
JSU's Zachary Fowler picked up the win with a six inning performance. Fowler stuck out three batters and gave up four earned runs.
The Colonels take on Jacksonville State in the second game of the series on Saturday at 4 p.m.
