Colonels Drop Heartbreaker To Morehead State

Box Score (PDF)

RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University men's basketball team lost a last-minute battle to in-state rival Morehead State, 70-67, on Saturday night at McBrayer Arena.

The Colonels (12-12, 3-6 OVC) trailed the Eagles, 59-53, late in the second half, but used a 9-3 run to tie the game at 62-62 following a pair of free throws by freshman Nick Mayo with 2:15 on the clock.

Brent Arrington responded with a three-pointer on Morehead State's next possession, though, and the Eagles led the rest of the way.

With six seconds on the clock and EKU down by only two, 69-67, junior JaVontae Hawkins took a long three-point shot from the left wing for the win, but came up short.

MSU's Miguel Dicent drew a foul on the rebound and went to the line to make one of two shots with just one-tenth of a second left.

EKU limited Morehead State to 36 percent (20-of-55) shooting from the field on the night, but the Colonels – the top three-point shooting team in the OVC – connected on just 1-of-17 from beyond the arc. It was their worst three-point shooting performance of the season.

Mayo and Jarelle Reischel led all players in the points column with 19 and 18 respectively. Mayo went 6-of-8 from the field, was a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line, and tallied a career-high five blocks. The Maine native notched his second double-double of the season, pulling down 10 boards. Reischel went 4-of-5 from the stripe and grabbed eight rebounds.

Xavier Moon led Morehead State (12-9, 6-3 OVC) with 14 points.  DeJuan Marrero had 11 points and 12 rebounds.

During the first half the Colonels used a 9-3 run that began with a pair of free throws from Hawkins and included four points from Reischel to gain their largest lead of the game, 32-26.  EKU led by four, 32-28, at the break.

Eastern Kentucky will play at Tennessee State on Thursday at 8 p.m.
