Four of Eastern's eight OVC opponents are currently ranked or receiving votes in the national polls, including previous opponents Tennessee State (No. 25) and Jacksonville State (No. 2) and this week's foe Tennessee-Martin (RV).
EKU (2-5, 1-3 OVC) is coming off a 24-7 loss to No. 2 Jacksonville State. The defense held the Jacksonville State offense without a touchdown in a game for the first time since 2012. The Gamecocks entered the game 15th in the nation in total offense, but were held 106 yards below their average.
Eastern had a season-low three penalties for a season-low 15 yards against JSU.
Devin Borders blocked a field goal attempt against No. 2 Jax State. His 13 career blocked kicks and eight career blocked field goals are both OVC records. In the FCS career rankings, he is second on the blocked kicks list and is tied for second on the blocked field goals list.
Eastern Kentucky has registered 13 sacks in the last four games, including six at Tennessee Tech (Oct. 1). The Colonels are second in the conference and 29th in the nation with an average of 2.43 sacks per game. On the other side of the ball, since allowing eight sacks at Ball State (Sept. 17), the EKU offensive line has only allowed two sacks the last four games, including just one against the vaunted Jacksonville State defense.
UT Martin is 4-4 overall and 3-1 in league games. The Skyhawks' three non-conference losses were all to Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams. The team's only conference set back was a 34-30 loss at Tennessee State.
UTM has the highest scoring offense in the Ohio Valley Conference at 36.2 points per game. Defensively, UT Martin is second in the conference in total defense at 338.2 yards per game.
Eastern Kentucky leads the all-time series with Tennessee-Martin, 23-3. The Colonels are 12-1 against the Skyhawks in games played in Martin. In the last game played on UT Martin's home field, Eastern won 49-24 on Sept. 13, 2014. EKU won the first 20 games in the series, but is 3-3 against UTM in the last six meetings. This will be
Mark Elder's first meeting against the Skyhawks as a head coach. UTM Head Coach Jason Simpson is 3-6 against Eastern Kentucky and is the only UT Martin coach to ever beat the Colonels.
