EKU Wins Share of First-Ever OVC Regular Season Crown!

RICHMOND, Ky.
– The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team won a share of its first-ever Ohio Valley Conference regular season title on Thursday, thanks to a win over Tennessee Tech and a Murray State / Austin Peay draw.

EKU will share the conference title with Murray State. The Colonels finished the regular season with a record of 13-4-0 (8-2-0 OVC), while the defending champion Racers went 8-4-4 (7-0-3 OVC). Both teams finished with 24 conference points to be named co-champions.

Murray State, however, beat EKU during the regular season and, therefore, holds the tiebreaker over the Colonels. The Racers will be the No. 1 seed and host of the upcoming OVC Tournament, while the Colonels will be the No. 2 seed. Both teams automatically receive a bye into the semifinals.

EKU will play the winner of No. 3 Tennessee Tech / No. 6 Belmont in the OVC semifinals on Friday, November 4, at 12:00 p.m. ET in Murray.

"What this team has accomplished this season is incredible," first-year head coach Nick Flohre said. "We asked the players to do whatever they could to help the team and they've been rewarded for it. Being crowned OVC Co-Champions in a conference with so many good teams is something we'll never forget."

EKU's story is an underdog story. The Colonels went 4-14 (4-6 OVC) last season and missed out on the OVC Tournament for the third consecutive year. They were picked to finish 10th in the OVC this season.

However, Eastern has flourished under Flohre, setting program records for wins (13), conference wins (eights), goals (30) and shutouts (10).

Junior Jordan Foster scored the game-winner against TTU in the 68th minute when she headed in a rebound directed to her by freshman Marian Wolski. The Fairborn, Ohio native now holds the program record for goal in a season with eight.

It was Wolski's second assist of the fall.

"We couldn't be prouder of the players and what they've been able to accomplish so far this season," Flohre said. "Today felt like a tournament game with how well both teams defended. We were fortunate to take advantage of our chance to score. The players deserve to be very proud of themselves and their teammates. They worked their tails off for today's win."

The Eastern defense continued to make Richmond a hostile environment for visiting teams, extending its home shutout streak to eight matches. No opponent has scored at EKU Soccer Field since the home opener against Xavier on August 21, a streak spanning 740 minutes of game action.

The Colonels wrapped up the regular season without allowing a goal to an OVC team at home.

Junior goalkeeper Anna Hall notched her OVC-best 10th shutout of the season in the win.

Sophomore center backs Kacy Eckley and Haley Kemper played all 90 minutes, helping ensure that Hall only had to make two saves on the day.
