RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentuckylost both games of an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader to Southeast Missouri on Saturday at Turkey Hughes Field, including a 12-inning pitching duel in game two. The Colonels fell by scores of 7-3 and 4-1.
In game two, both teams reached the ninth inning having not scored. Hunter Leeper's sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth broke the scoreless tie.
Kyle Nowlin drew a one-out walk in the bottom half of the inning.
Mandy Alvarez followed with a game-tying RBI double down the right field line.
The Redhawks platted three in the top of the 12th. Ryan Rippee and Brian Lees had back-to-back run scoring singles through the left side to break the 1-1 tie.
SEMO starter Robert Beltran allowed one run in eight and one-third innings. He gave up two hits and struck out six.
Alex Hamilton started for the Colonels and did not allow a run in seven innings of work. He gave up four hits, walked three and struck out three.
Shea Sullivan had two hits in five at bats for Eastern Kentucky (7-8, 0-3 OVC). Rippee finished 3-for-6 with two runs and an RBI for Southeast (9-7, 3-0 OVC).
Southeast Missouri took the quick lead in game one of the doubleheader. The Redhawks scored six runs in the first three innings. Branden Boggetto had a two-run double in the first. Chris Osborne hit the first of two home runs in the third inning, a two-run shot over the wall in right field.
The EKU pitching staff allowed just one run over the final six innings. The Colonels got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Cole Warrenfeltz had an RBI single in the inning. Warrenfeltz drew a bases loaded walk in the eighth to get his squad within four, but that is as close as they would get.
Osborne finished 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs. Boggetto also had three RBIs. Warrenfeltz went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
The Colonels will hit the road this coming week during spring break. EKU plays at No. 21 Mississippi State on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Eastern plays at Alabama A&M on Wednesday at 3 p.m. The week concludes with a conference series at Belmont in Nashville.
