Box Score
RICHMOND, Ky. – Big fifth and seventh innings were just what the Eastern Kentucky University baseball team needed to put its game against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore out of reach. With their 14-3 win over UMES Sunday afternoon at Turkey Hughes Field the Colonels won the series 3-1.
At 7-5, EKU is off to its best start since the 2010 season. It was also Eastern's first series victory in the first home series of a season since 2011.
To start the fifth inning
Kyle Nowlin drew a walk. The three-hole batter
Mandy Alvarez stepped into the box and converted the first pitch into a two-run round-tripper.
Cole Warrenfeltz would also notch an RBI with a single through the left side, plating
Shea Sullivan. EKU came out of the inning with a six-run advantage, 7-1.
Between errors, walks, and a single from
Alex Holderbach the Colonels put three across the plate early in the seventh. Then EKU's heavy-hitting senior Nowlin squared up and roped one over the left field wall for three more runs. The six-run inning gave the home team an 11-run advantage.
Alvarez and
Doug Teegarden led the offensive. Alvarez went 3-for-5 with one run, two RBIs and one home run, while Teegarden went 2-of-4 with three runs scored and one walk.
As a team, Eastern drew 10 walks and had 12 hits.
Justin Somerville and Jordan Martin both went 2-for-3 on the day for the Hawks (4-7).
Nick Cumpston tallied the win for the Colonel pitching staff after allowing only five hits in five and one-third innings of work.
Caleb Johnson replaced Cumpston early in the sixth inning and sat down six of the 10 batters he faced in the remaining three and two-thirds innings, allowing a mere two hits and no runs.
EKU will be back in action on Friday at Turkey Hughes Field for its first conference series of the season against Southeast Missouri State University. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
