Colonels Split Saturday Doubleheader Against SEMO

Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box

RICHMOND, Ky. –
The EKU softball team split Saturday's Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader against Southeast Missouri State University at Gertrude Hood Field.

EKU (32-11, 14-4 OVC) took game one, 4-2, before falling, 5-2, in Saturday's finale.

The Colonels took advantage of two SEMO miscues in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead. Senior Kayla Joyce drove a double down the line in left, before sophomore Paige Murphy got on base after being hit by a Redhawk pitch. A double steal from Joyce and Murphy forced an erred throw that allowed Joyce to cross the plate and put the Colonels in front.

Later in the inning, freshman Rachel Minogue singled to load the bases. EKU added to its lead after Murphy scored following a wild pitch.

SEMO knotted the score in the top half of the sixth on a two-run homer from Savannah Carpenter.

The Colonels responded with two runs in the home half of the inning to pick up their first win of the day. Mingoue drilled a two RBI double to right field, scoring Murphy and senior Sarah Fobbs giving EKU the win.

Fobbs' two-run shot to the gap in left gave the Colonels an early 2-0 lead in game two. Krislyn Campos led off the inning with a base on balls before advancing on a well-executed sacrifice bunt from Joyce. Ahead in the count, 3-1, Murphy also drew a walk to put two on for Fobbs.

The Redhawks plated four runs in the fourth and another in the top of the seventh to pick up the 5-2 win in game two. SEMO used a solo homer from Brittany Stevens and a three-run shot from Darby Pruett to go up 4-0, before adding a lone run in the seventh.

Minogue went 2-for-5 on the day and led the Colonels with five RBI.

EKU senior right-hander Hayley Flynn picked up her 22nd win of the season after tossing six innings and striking out eight. Junior Alex Sallberg notched her OVC best eighth save after coming in relief in game one.

The Colonels return to Gertrude Hood Field on Sunday with a doubleheader against UT Martin. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday.
