RICHMOND, Ky. – With three home runs in the second game, Eastern Kentucky swept an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader against Eastern Illinois on Friday at Turkey Hughes Field.
The Colonels won game one 9-3 before taking the night cap 7-5.
In game one, EKU broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth when
Ben Fisher scored on a single up the middle by
Logan Starnes. The Colonels built a cushion in the seventh. Fisher drove home two runs with a single to right field to make it 6-2.
Kenny Hostrander's three-run double down the left field line in the eighth allowed the home team to go in front by six, 9-3.
Fisher finished 2-for-5 with a run and two RBIs.
Mandy Alvarez was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.
Cole Warrenfeltz and
Matt Olive also had two hits each.
Alex Hamilton (4-5) allowed just two runs on seven hits in six innings of work. He walked three and struck out four.
Frankie Perrone had three hits in four at bats for Eastern Illinois. He tied the game 2-2 with an RBI single up the middle in the fourth.
Taylor Blair's three-run home run in the third gave EKU (19-25, 9-11 OVC) the lead in game two. It was Blair's second home run of the season. Hostrander had a RBI single later in the inning. A run scoring double down the left field line in the fourth by
Mandy Alvarez and a solo home run by Fisher in the fifth made it a 6-0 game. Fisher now has seven home runs.
The Panthers got on the board in the top of the sixth on a solo home run by Demetre Taylor.
Kyle Nowlin's 16th home run of the season in the sixth put the Colonels back on top by six runs.
Blair finished the second game 2-for-4 with a run and three RBIs. Fisher was 2-for-4 with two runs and one driven in. Nowlin walked twice while going 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI.
Erik Nerl (5-3) started and gave up three runs on six hits in six and two-thirds innings. He walked two and struck out three.
Eastern Illinois (7-35, 2-18 OVC) closed the gap to four, 7-3, on a two-run single through the right side in the seventh by Cale Hennemann. The Panthers got within two with an RBI double by Frankie Perrone and a runs scoring single by Nick Maton in the top of the eighth. Hennemann would finish 2-for-5 with two RBIs.
The two teams will attempt to conclude their conference series on Saturday at 3 p.m.
