RICHMOND, Ky. –
Despite holding Jacksonville State University to more than two runs and three hits below its season average, the EKU softball team fell to the Gamecocks, 3-0, on Saturday at Gertrude Hood Field.

EKU (33-13, 15-6 OVC) senior pitcher Hayley Flynn went the distance for the Colonels. Flynn logged her seventh complete game of the year, tallied eight strikeouts and allowed only five hits in the loss.

Flynn held the Ohio Valley Conference's leading offensive unit hitless through the first three and one third innings, before JSU's Stephanie Lewis singled in the fourth. The Colonels denied the Gamecocks of any runs in the inning, as the score remained tied until JSU got on the board in the fifth.

Leila Chambers' leadoff homer to center field gave the Gamecocks a 1-0 lead, but stellar defensive play from the Colonels thwarted additional JSU runs. Later in the inning, EKU sophomore centerfielder Paige Murphy scampered across the outfield to rob Ella Denes of a double to the gap with a full extension grab. Murphy snagged another fly ball off the bat of Jordan Bullock to end the inning.

The Gamecocks (33-14, 22-0 OVC) added two more in the top of the seventh after a solo homer from Whitney Gillespie and an RBI single from Anna Chisolm.

EKU recorded two hits in the fourth, as senior Sarah Fobbs singled to right to start the inning before freshman Rachel Minogue drove a single up the middle but the Colonels were unable to muster a run.

Fobbs, Minogue and junior Krislyn Campos finished 1-for-3 from the plate for the Colonels.

Due to weather, the teams agreed to play a single game on Saturday rather than a doubleheader. A single game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. pitch on Sunday at Gertrude Hood Field.
