CHARLESTON, Ill. – Senior pitcher
Hayley Flynn struck out 23 batters, setting a new Eastern Kentucky University program record in the Colonels' first of two losses in Saturday's doubleheader against Eastern Illinois University at Williams Field.
Flynn's performance broke EKU's previous record for strikeouts in a game (18) set by
Leanna Pittsenbarger against Eastern Illinois on April 5, 2014.
The Colonels (26-8, 10-2 OVC) fell 1-0 in game one that went 12 innings before falling 7-3 in Saturday's finale. Saturday's losses marked the first losses for the Colonels in Ohio Valley Conference play.
Saturday's opener was a textbook pitching duel, as Flynn and EIU's Jessica Wireman went toe-to-toe.
The Colonels threatened in the fourth with two aboard and two outs but could not convert.
Flynn held the Panthers hitless through the first four innings until a single from April Markowski in the bottom of the fifth. However the Colonels ended the short-lived threat as Flynn struck out two and
Amber Murray caught Mady Poutler as she was trying to steal second.
The two teams held each other at bay until the Panthers threatened again in the eleventh inning.
EIU used back-to-back hits and a walk to load the bases in the eleventh. With two outs and the bases loaded, junior
Alex Sallberg came in and calmly got the strikeout to retire the side.
However, the Colonels went down in order in the top of the twelfth before a walk-off RBI from Ashlynne Paul on a fielder's choice.
In game two, EKU struck first on an RBI single from
Sarah Jackson in the top of the second.
EIU knotted the game at one with a run in the bottom of the third before plating three runs in each of the next three innings to take a 7-1 lead.
Freshman
Brittany Oldaker blasted her first career homer with a two run shot in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to four, but EKU could not muster any more runs.
EKU travels to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (13-18, 7-5 OVC) on Sunday for a conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
