Box Score (PDF)

RICHMOND, Ky. —
Behind a career-high 11 kills from freshman Kaylin Johnson and timely kills from junior Nikki Drost, the EKU volleyball team won its sixth straight over in-state rival Morehead State University with Wednesday's 3-0 win at McBrayer Arena.

The Colonels won by scores of 27-25, 25-14, and 25-23.

MSU (5-11, 1-2 Ohio Valley Conference) grabbed an early lead in the opening set. However, the Colonels battled back and built a 19-16 lead after a kill from junior Ciera Koons capped a 10-4 EKU run.

The Eagles hung close and pulled ahead late in the set. But a kill from Drost denied MSU the set-clinching point and sparked the Colonels to three straight points to close the set.

Morehead State took a 1-0 lead to open the second set, but its lead was short lived. The Colonel offense exploded, as Johnson racked up four of her 11 kills on the night.

Up 13-10, another well-timed kill from Drost ignited another Colonel run. EKU widened its lead to 10, as kills from junior Celina Sanks and Johnson helped clinch the second set for the Colonels.

The EKU lead narrowed momentarily in the deciding set as the Eagles took a 21-20 lead. However, the Colonels did not fret. Tied at 23, a miscalculated attack from MSU's Merideth Jewell put the Colonels in front by one. That was all EKU needed, as Drost's game-winning swing clinched the match for EKU.

With the win, the Colonels have won their last four home openers at McBrayer Arena.

Johnson led all performers with 11 kills, as Drost turned in nine kills and 12 digs for EKU.

The Colonels continue their four-game home stretch on Saturday as they host Austin Peay State University in another conference match. Saturday's match is scheduled for 2 p.m.
