CHARLESTON, Ill. – Despite homering six times the Eastern Kentucky University baseball team dropped the first two games of its Ohio Valley Conference series at Eastern Illinois on Friday and Saturday.
Â
Game one of the series started on Friday and was suspended due to darkness as the teams were tied, 11-11, in the 11th inning. The game resumed on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Eastern (21-18, 7-10 OVC) fell behind early in game one, facing a 7-1 deficit heading into the fourth inning. With the bases loaded,
Ryland Kerr had excellent timing for his first home run of the season. The grand slam put the Colonels back in it as they trailed 7-5.
Â
EKU outscored EIU 10-4 in innings four through nine to push the game into extras before falling in the 11th by a 13-11 score.
Â
Kerr's two hits and four RBIs led the way for Eastern in game one.
Logan Starnes,
Shea Sullivan and
Nick Howie also homered for the Colonels in the contest.
Â
EKU looked to bounce back in game two, but found itself trailing early again as the Panthers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning. EIU added two more runs in the fifth inning to take a 6-0 lead into the sixth.
Â
Eastern attempted to start a rally in the sixth as
Alex Holderbach doubled to left center to bring Sullivan home. EIU responded to the lone EKU run with a three-run bottom of the sixth to take a 9-1 lead.
Â
The Panthers added an insurance run in the seventh, but Colonels were not going to go away quietly. With two outs in the eighth, Holderbach came to the plate and launched his fifth home run of the season. Howie followed him to the plate and also homered, his seventh of the season. The EKU rally stalled after that, and the Colonels faced a 10-3 deficit heading to the bottom of the eighth.
Â
EIU responded with a six-run bottom of the eighth to take a 16-3 lead into the final frame. The Colonels scored two runs in the top of the ninth, but it was too little, too late, as EKU fell in game two, 16-5.
Â
Holderbach's three hits and two RBIs led the way for EKU in game two. Howie notched two hits with one RBI.
Â
EKU looks to avoid the sweep in the series finale on Sunday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.Â
