Baseball Drops Mid-Week Tilt At WKU

Box Score

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.
– The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team dropped the second game of its home-and-home series with the Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers, 14-3, on Tuesday night at Nick Denes Field.

EKU (22-23, 8-13 OVC) faced a 1-0 deficit heading into the third inning, but that is where Eastern struck back. Matt Olive led the inning off with a single, followed by a single from Brenden Overton. After Ryland Kerr advanced the runners with a groundout, Cornell Nixon brought them home with a single and a throwing error by the Hilltopper's second baseman, Tyler Robertson.

WKU (14-32, 4-17 C-USA) regained the lead with a two-run fourth, and extended its lead with a three-run fifth to take a 6-2 lead into the sixth inning.

Daniel McFarland led off the sixth with a double to left center, and scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly from Overton, but that is all the Colonels could muster and went to the bottom of the sixth down 6-3.

The Hilltoppers responded with three-run innings in the sixth and seventh, and a two-run eighth, putting the game out of reach and eventually winning, 14-3.

McFarland led the way for EKU with three hits. Nixon and Overton had one RBI each.

The Colonels head to Murray State for an Ohio Valley Conference series this weekend. First pitch for the series opener is set for 7 p.m. on Friday.
