Colonels Set To Play In Carolina Classic

COLUMBIA, S.C. –
The Eastern Kentucky University volleyball team travels to Columbia, South Carolina this weekend to take part in the Carolina Classic, hosted by the University of South Carolina. The squad will play two games on Friday, facing the Gamecocks at 1 p.m. and Radford University at 4 p.m. and then play the first game on Saturday against Miami of Ohio at 11 a.m.
 
 
HERE'S THE SKINNY:
 
-EKU (2-5) just finished a two week road swing of the west coast, taking part in the Aztec Invitational, hosted by San Diego State University, playing a midweek game at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and the Cactus Classic, hosted by the University of Arizona.
 
-The Colonels opened the swing by taking down San Diego State at home in four sets.
 
-Cassie Knutson and Rachel Woody were named to the Aztec Invitational All-Tournament team.
 
-Chloe Rojas was named Cactus Classic All-Tournament.
 
-The Colonels took UNLV into five sets on their home floor.
 
-EKU returns all letterwinners from last season.
 
 
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS:
 
SOUTH CAROLINA
-This is the second tournament this season that South Carolina (4-2) has hosted. They swept the first, defeating Mercer, Troy and North Florida in a total of nine sets.
 
-The Gamecocks most recently competed in the Duke Invitational where they opened up the tournament with back-to-back losses against Northwestern and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. They finished strong, defeating Duke in four sets.
 
-This will be the eighth meeting between the two teams, the Colonels fall behind in the overall record, 1-6.
 
-South Carolina returns 12 letterwinners, but has lost five.
 
-Gamecock blockers were key to the win over Duke, notching a total of 13.
 
-They are out-blocking opponents 56.0-to-30.5.
 
RADFORD
-The Highlanders (7-0) are undefeated on the season, most recently winning the Cactus Classic.
-At the Cactus Classic they placed three on the all-tournament team: Maddie Palmer (MVP), Kaylor Nash and Valerie Gonzalez.
 
-This will be the second time the Colonels have squared off against Radford this season and the second time in a week after facing them on Sept. 1. It will be the fourth time overall, Colonels lead 2-1.
 
-RU is putting more balls down than opponents, notching 280 kills to 226.
 
MIAMI (OHIO)
-The Redhawks (4-4) are on a two-game skid after falling to Dayton at home in five sets and Wichita State on Saturday in four.
 
-Miami returns 13 letterwinners, losing three.
 
-The last meeting between the teams was in 2003. The all-time record is 5-11 Miami.
 
-As a team the Redhawks are hitting a .220 attack percentage, with opponents hitting a clip of .231.
 
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
 
-The Colonels will play their first home match against Seattle University on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. before hitting the road again to play in the Panther Challenge at the University of Pittsburgh.
