Box Score

CHARLOTTE AMALIE, ST. THOMAS, V.I.
– The Eastern Kentucky University men's basketball team staged a furious late charge; however, Northern Iowa was able to hold on for a 90-85 win over the Colonels on Saturday night at the 2018 U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam.

EKU (2-3) trailed by 16 – 82-66 – with just over four minutes to play in the game. However, the Colonels exploded on a 12-0 run over the next 1:44 to trim the lead to four. A three-point play by junior Kelvin Robinson ignited the run, six consecutive points from junior Lachlan Anderson sustained it, and a three-pointer from the wing by sophomore Peyton Broughton capped it. Broughton's triple made it 82-78 with 2:18 showing on the clock.

Northern Iowa (2-2) got a bucket on the other end to stretch the lead back out to six, but the Colonels still were not done.

Senior Nick Mayo responded by banking in a driving layup. On EKU's next possession, he buried a deep three-pointer to make it a one-point game, 84-83, with just over a minute to play.

The Colonels had a chance to take the lead. Anderson came up with a steal on the other end of the court. He fed it to Broughton on the break, but Broughton's contested layup rimmed out.

Northern Iowa's A.J. Green then converted a three-point play to make it 87-83 with 25 seconds remaining, and the Colonels never got closer than four the rest of the way.

Mayo finished the night with 27 points and six rebounds. He was one of five Colonels in double figures.

Anderson tallied 14 points and six boards in the game. Robinson added 12 points and a team-best six assists. Broughton scored 12 points on 3-of-6 shooting from deep.

Freshman Tre King, meanwhile, came off the bench and provided a much-needed spark in the first half. He finished with a career-high 12 points and three rebounds.

The Colonels connected on a season-best 13 three-pointers in the loss.

EKU out-rebounded Northern Iowa, 41-34; however, the Colonels lost the turnover battle, 15-12. UNI converted those 15 EKU turnovers into 23 points.

Eastern will now play Kennesaw State on Monday at 1:00 p.m. ET.
