Colonels Split The Day To Close Black and Orange Challenge

GAME ONE BOX | GAME TWO BOX

MACON, Ga. –
The Eastern Kentucky University softball team caught fire in the second game of the day, racking up eight hits to include four for extra bases to defeat the University of Akron, 7-1. The Colonels split the day after falling to Mercer in game one.

Destinee Lizzmore and Emily Corbitt drew walks in the bottom of the first to get things started for Eastern against the Zips. Senior Johnkyria Alston laced a double to right center to plate the pair and put the Colonels up 2-0.

In the second frame Melissa Jacobsen was the first to reach for Eastern Kentucky. Lizzmore then cranked a double for a RBI and a batter later was pushed across on a Paige Murphy single, 4-0.

Akron attempted to cut into EKU's lead in the top of the third, plating an unearned run off of a sacrifice fly to draw within three. But, couldn't seem to overcome the deficit.

Mattira Morales extended the score after hitting a sacrifice fly of her own to plate Hannah Clark in the bottom of the stanza.

Two more in the fourth rounded out the seven for the Colonels.

Murphy finished the second game 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and one run scored.

Mollie Paulick collected her second win of the season from the circle after pitching a complete game and allowing just two hits and no earned runs.

Lizzmore scored the lone run for the Colonels against Mercer (11-2) after going yard in the first at-bat of the game. The Bears tacked on runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings to top EKU, 5-1.

Lizzmore went 2-for-4 on the day with a home run, a double, two RBIs, a walk and three runs scored.

Eastern Kentucky (7-5) was originally scheduled to close out the Black and Orange Challenge tomorrow against Mercer, but that game has been cancelled.

The Colonels will return to the diamond next weekend at the Winthrop Invitational.
