Colonels Shutout Bowling Green In Home Opener

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ky. –
A pair of three run home runs by Alex Holderbach and Will Johnson earned Eastern Kentucky a 9-0 victory over Bowling Green in the home-opener at Earle Combs Stadium on Wednesday.

The Colonels' dominance began in the third inning when Johnson doubled down the left field line. Tyler Romanik drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Two batters later, Holderbach drilled his first home run of the season over the wall in right center to put Eastern up 5-0.

Cornell Nixon drew a walk to start the bottom of the fourth inning, stealing second base just a few pitches later. After Ryland Kerr drew a walk on a full count, Johnson lifted a homer to left field that barely cleared the wall to empty the bases.

Johnson finished 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs courtesy of his home run. Daniel Harris IV went 2-for-4 on the night while Nixon recorded three stolen bases in his first game of the season. Holderbach finished with three RBIs and drew a walk and was hit by a pitch.

Eastern got on the board early in the first inning when a groundout to third base brought Kerr home. Logan Stephens reached home from third in the second inning on an error by the catcher. A Nick Howie ground out to shortstop in the eighth brought home Miles Jones to give the Colonels a 9-0 advantage.

Logan Teague picked up his first win of the season, going five innings before being relieved by Will Brian. Teague allowed just four hits, did not walk a batter and struck out three.  Brian recorded two strikeouts in his lone-inning.

"Logan Teague set the tone for us on the mound and to have a shutout in our home opener is awesome," said EKU Head Coach Edwin Thompson. "Our bullpen was great.  Defensively we played pretty well. It was fun see us play a complete ball game and to continue to grow offensively."

The Colonels' four-game home stand continues on Friday with the opener of a three-game series against Coppin State.  The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
