Colonels Sweep Sixth Conference Opponent of the Season, Extend Winning Streak To Nine Games

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. –
The Eastern Kentucky University softball team took down Tennessee Tech in both games of an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Tech Softball Field, sweeping its sixth league opponent of the season and extending its winning streak to nine games. The Colonels won by scores of 6-1 and 8-0.

TTU struck first in game one after a solo home run from Hallie Davis I the bottom of the second, 1-0.

Both teams remained silent until top of the fourth when Emily Corbitt reached on a fielding error by shortstop. Carly Robinson singled to right field to even the score at 1-1.

The Colonel bats came alive in the fifth after Mollie Paulick began the rally with a walk. Paige Murphy doubled to right center to collect an RBI and put EKU ahead for the first time in the game, 2-1. Johkyria Alston then tacked on a single, advanced on the throw and brought home Murphy, 3-1. Corbitt added another double, adding to the score, 4-1. Zoe Mihalicz followed with a single to put up a final run as the Colonels piled on four runs on four hits in the frame.

Robinson added an insurance run after a solo shot to open the sixth stanza, 6-1.

Paulick went the distance in game one, dealing her seventh complete game of the season. The sophomore moves to 13-5 on the year.

The Colonels drew first blood in game two, starting off the first frame with a trio of walks from Murphy, Hannah Clark and Alston. Corbitt then collected a two-bagger to plate two, 2-0.

Mihalicz grounded out, but not before Alston could tack on another run and make it 3-0 early.

Eastern Kentucky added a pair in the third frame.

Brooke Harrison reached after being hit by a pitch in the sixth. Mattira Morales brought her home after hammering one off the left center wall, 6-0. In the latter half of the inning Murphy was issued a four pitch walk and Clark reached on a fielder's choice. Alston then singled to right center to bring home Murphy, and after a throwing error, Clark crossed to push the lead to 8-0.

The Golden Eagles were unable to find an answer in the bottom half of the inning, ending the game on run-rule.

McRoberts (10-4) threw five innings of scoreless softball with six strikeouts to be the second Colonel pitcher to reach 10 wins.

After the victory, EKU moves to 31-14 (13-1 OVC) while TTU drops to 16-29 (7-11 OVC).

The Colonels return to the diamond tomorrow in a twin bill at Jacksonville State. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. ET.
