ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Eastern Kentucky University volleyball team heads to the University of New Mexico this weekend to take part in the Lobo Classic.

On Friday, EKU will play New Mexico at 2:45 p.m. ET and New Mexico State at 7:15 p.m. The Colonels will wrap up against Florida Gulf Coast at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

-The Colonels started the season at No. 6 Penn State last weekend. EKU fell to the Nittany Lions, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and the United States Naval Academy.

Lindsey Wilkins was named to the Penn State Classic All-Tournament Team.

Chloe Rojas was the third Colonel to take Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year following the 2017 campaign.
-Rojas and
Cassie Knutson were each named to the preseason all-conference team.

Lori Duncan is entering her 21
st and final season.
-The Colonels return eight, welcome in two transfers and bring in five freshmen.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS:

NEW MEXICO
-This will be the first meeting between EKU and the Lobos.
-The squad went 1-2 last weekend at the Idaho Tournament, falling to Grand Canyon and Santa Clara before taking down Idaho in five sets.
-New Mexico finished 16-16 with a 7-11 mark in Mountain West last season.
-Sophomore Lauren Twitty led the team in kills last season with 412. She leads the team so far this season with 49.
-The Lobos are predicted to finish fifth in the MW this season.

NEW MEXICO STATE
-EKU has faced the Aggies twice, holding an 0-2 record against them. The last contest came in 1983.
-NM State finished 2017 with a 21-8 overall mark with a 12-2 record in the Western Athletic Conference.
-The squad has opened the season with a 2-1 mark after taking down Pacific and UT Arlington but falling to Arizona State last weekend.
-The Aggies welcome in nine freshman this season.

FGCU
-This will be the first time the Colonels have taken on FGCU.
-The Eagles are 2-1 on the season after topping Florida Atlantic and Miami each in three sets, but falling to Central Florida in four last weekend.
-Florida Gulf Coast finished last season with a 22-10 mark overall and 10-4 record in Atlantic Sun play.
-Maggie Rick was named preseason setter of the year while Amanda Carroll, Snowy Burnam and Daniele Serrano were all named preseason all-conference selections.
