RICHMOND, Ky. – Logan Teague and
Kaven Brown turned in a pair of stellar pitching performances as Eastern Kentucky swept a doubleheader against Maryland Eastern Shore on Friday at Earle Combs Stadium.
Â
The Colonels (4-2) won by scores of 5-1 and 16-1.
Â
Due to heaving rain moving into the area, the two teams will continue their four-game series on Saturday and Sunday at Wright State University's Nischwitz Stadium in Dayton, Ohio. Both games are currently scheduled for 10 a.m. Please monitor EKUSports.com for updates throughout the weekend.
Â
In game one, the Colonels grabbed a 2-0 lead when
Nick Howie drove in
Ryland Kerr with a double in the third, and
Will Johnson scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth.
Â
That was all Teague (1-0) needed. The senior from Lancaster, Kentucky allowed just one hit and two walks while striking out seven over seven scoreless innings.
Â
Eastern got a couple, two-out, RBI hits from freshmen
Michael Brewer and
Marcus Hill in the bottom of the eighth for insurance.
Â
Howie finished 2-for-2 with two walks and an RBI. Johnson was 1-for-2 with three walks, a stolen base, two runs and an RBI.
Â
UMES starter Dwayne Marshall (1-1) allowed one run on four hits in three and one-third innings. He pitched seven scoreless innings with seven strikeouts in a season-opening win for the Hawks last weekend.
Â
In game two,
Chris Botsoe got Eastern on the board in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly to right field.Â
Logan Thomason made it 2-0 with an RBI double to right center in the fourth inning.Â
Corey Conklin's two-run double to left center in the fifth doubled the Colonel lead. Five more runs scored in the 7-run inning.
Â
Brown surpassed his previous career-best of eight strike outs with his ninth of the game in the top of the fifth inning. His previous career-high came last season in a win at No. 11 Vanderbilt. The senior allowed just one hit and one walk in five innings of work.
Â
Howie went 3-for-4 in game two with an RBI. In both games combined, he was 5-for-6 with two RBIs. Conklin was 3-for-4 with a run and three RBIs in the second game.
Â
Peter Jamieson had two hits for Maryland Eastern Shore (1-5).
"I thought it was a good job on both ends by our pitching staff," Head Coach
Edwin Thompson said. "Kaven and Logan gave us great starts.  It was an awesome outing by both seniors when we needed it to get length in a long weekend series. Game one was a simple, good baseball game.  We didn't have anything going offensively and then game two we were able to get the lead and had a huge seven-run fifth inning.  That was really the difference. We had plenty of freshmen out there in game two and they took advantage of the opportunity.  I was really proud of a lot of guys today.  The bottom of the lineup did great on top of what
Nick Howie contributed. It was all around a good effort but the pitching and defense is what led the way for the sweep today."
