Colonels Lead Early, But Fall To Dayton

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky jumped out to a 3-0 lead but Dayton scored 11 unanswered on its way to a 17-5 win on Wednesday at Earle Combs Stadium.

Will Johnson led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run over the wall in left center.  It was his sixth of the season and the first of five straight hits for EKU.  The final two hits in the streak were an RBI single to left center from Chris Botsoe and a run scoring double down the left field line by Brent Lovell.  The Colonels ended the first with a 3-0 advantage.
 
The Flyers (11-11-1) answered with seven runs in the second and three more in the third to pull out to a big lead.  Connor Echols' two-run single through the left side highlighted a second inning that featured five hits for Dayton and two Eastern errors.  Tate Hagan had a two-run double in the third for UD.
 
Ryland Kerr had a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh for Eastern Kentucky (14-12).  He finished 2-for-5 with a run and two RBIs.  Lovell went 1-for-3 with an RBI.  Botsoe was 2-for-4 with a run.
 
Echols finished the night 2-for-4 with a run and three RBIs.  Hagan was 2-for-4 with three driven in.  Takahiro Yamada had a 3-for-5 day with a walk, three runs and two RBI.
 
The Colonels take to the road for a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series this weekend at Southern Illinois Edwardsville.  Friday's series-opener is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and will air live on ESPN+.
