James Sugira Competes at NCAA Indoor Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
– Eastern Kentucky University freshman James Sugira competed in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday night at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
 
Sugira tripped and fell out of the race with around 1,200 meters to go. He did not finish.
 
The native of Kigali, Rwanda entered the race ranked No. 7 out of 16 competitors with a school-record time of 13:37.8, which he ran at the Washington Husky Classic on February 8.
 
He was the first Colonel to compete in a track event at the NCA Indoor Championships since Soufiane Bouchikhi and Lydia Kosgei both qualified in the 5,000 meters in 2012.
 
Wisconsin's Morgan McDonald won the national title with a time of 13:41.7.
 
EKU opens the outdoor season March 16 at Butler's Stan Lyons Invitational.
