Box Score

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky couldn't overcome four early home runs by Austin Peay in an 8-1 loss on Friday at Earle Combs Stadium.

Garrett Spain led off the top of the second inning with a home run over the wall in right center for the Governors (15-13, 9-4 OVC).  It was the first of four solo home runs by APSU in the first four innings.  John McDonald led off the third with a home run over the wall in right center.  Back-to-back dingers in the fourth by Malcolm Tipler and Matt Joslin put the visitors on top 5-0.

The Colonels (17-14, 5-5 OVC) got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Logan Thomason hit his third home run of the season.  The solo homer made it a 6-1 game.

Chris Botsoe was 2-for-4 for Eastern Kentucky.  Thomason went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

David Martinez hit a two-run home run in the eighth, Austin Peay's fifth of the game.  He finished 3-for-5 with a run and three RBIs.  Tipler had a 2-for-4 day with two runs and an RBI.  Josh Rye (4-3) held EKU to one run on five hits over seven and two-thirds innings.  He struck out eight and walked one.

"Their pitcher did a great job," Eastern Kentucky Head Coach Edwin Thompson said.  "Eight strikeouts, one walk.  That's what you want on a Friday night.  Tomorrow we will have to not give them so many easy outs – pop ups and strikeouts.  We will have to be more competitive at the plate.  We hope to limit their opportunities tomorrow."
