AKRON, Ohio – Junior
Kylie Thompson's golden goal with 30 seconds remaining in double overtime lifted the Eastern Kentucky University soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 win over Akron on Sunday afternoon in the Colonels' non-conference finale at First Energy Stadium.
The game was locked in a scoreless draw until the 86
th minute when redshirt sophomore
Sarah Owusu converted a penalty kick to give the Colonels a late 1-0 advantage. It was Owusu's first goal of the season.
Less than two minutes later, however, Akron's Ashley Amato responded with a penalty kick goal of her own to equalize for the Zips.
In the waning seconds of double overtime, Thompson's strike finally won it for the Colonels. The build-up to the goal was textbook. Owusu found senior
Monica Rios streaking across the middle of the field. Rios threaded the needle ahead to Thompson, who was able to set just outside the box and unleash a ball off her right foot that found the lower left corner of the net.
It was Thompson's team-leading fourth goal of the season. It was the sixth assist of Rios' career.
"Akron is a gritty team that wasn't afraid of our physical style of play," head coach
Matt Cosinuke said. "I think we struggled with our defensive rotations today and that made things a lot more difficult than they needed to be. This was a great tune-up for conference and pushed our family to go the distance."
Owusu led all players in the game with four shots, two of which were on frame. Sophomore
Baylee Lanter attempted three shots.
Junior center back
Katie Shaffer player all 110 minutes on EKU's backline.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Zoe Aguirre surrendered only the late PK and made four saves in the game.
"We are creating chances and are continuing to develop an understanding about the way we want to play," Cosinuke added. "I couldn't be more proud of this family's fight and intensity in the last minute."
EKU (2-6) will now open OVC play at Jacksonville State on Friday night, Sept. 20. First touch is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.
