JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Eastern Kentucky won the first set, but Kennesaw State won the next three for a 3-1 win on Sunday at the University of North Florida.
The Owls won by scores of 23-25, 25-14, 25-19 and 25-16.
EKU never led in the first set until a kill by
Sarah Mitchell tied it 21-21 and a KSU attack error on the next series gave the Colonels a 22-21 lead. With the set tied at 23-23,
Anna Purichia put down a kill and
Molly Michalak registered a kill to end it and give Eastern Kentucky an early 1-0 lead.
Kennesaw State (14-8, 8-3 ASUN) jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the second set and led from start to finish. The Owls then scored the first five points of the third set and never trailed on their way to taking a 2-1 lead in the match. The Colonels (6-19, 3-8 ASUN) never got closer than two.
EKU stayed within striking distance for the first half of the fourth set. A kill from
Kali Walker and a KSU attack error got the Colonels within one, 11-10, however from that point Kennesaw State went on a 14-6 run to end the set and the match.
Mitchell finished with 11 kills and six digs.
Sydney Schoen had two aces and 12 digs.
Audrey Eurton had 32 assists, a block assist and seven digs.
Lauren Chastang and Emma Schurfranz contributed 16 kills each to lead KSU.
The Colonels will play at North Alabama on Friday at 8 p.m.
