EKU Volleyball Falls In A Pair Of Matches Against Southeast Missouri On Sunday

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. –
The Eastern Kentucky University volleyball team fell in a pair of matches against Southeast Missouri on Sunday in Missouri.
 
The Redhawks won by scores of 20-25, 25-23, 25-18 and 25-22 in the first match. Southeast Missouri took the second match 23-25, 28-26, 25-20 and 25-14.
 
In set one, the two teams traded points for the first half of the opening stanza. With the set tied at 16-16, the Colonels went on a 5-1 run to take a 21-17 lead after a Maddy Campbell kill. Eastern capped off the opening set with back-to-back errors by SEMO to take the opening set, 25-20.
 
Again, in the second set the two teams traded points and no one ever led by more than three points. After a Lindsey Wilkins kill tied the second set, 23-23, the Redhawks took the final two points capped off by a Laney Malloy and Talia Gouard block to win the second set, 25-23.
 
SEMO took an early 3-1 in set number three and never trailed. The Colonels tied it, 11-11, after a Malloy error but Eastern could never take the lead. The Redhawks took the set after a Claire Ochs kill, 25-18.
 
The final stanza was back-and-forth again and the two teams traded punches for the entire set. After Eastern tied the match at 20-20 with an Audrey Eurton kill, SEMO closed the set on a 5-2 run and took the set, 25-22, and the match.
 
Jovana Bulatovic led the way for the Colonels with 13 kills and a .267 hitting percentage. Eurton had 38 assists and 10 digs.
 
Malloy posted a game-best 15 kills and 14 digs for Southeast Missouri. Ochs had a team-best 40 assists to go with 10 digs.

The Colonels again jumped out early in the second match of the day and took a 1-0 lead after winning the opening set. With the set tied, 13-13, Eastern went on a quick 4-1 run after a kill by Wilkins to take a 17-14 lead. Southeast Missouri cut the EKU lead to one, 23-22, but the Colonels scored the final two points of the set after a kill by Molly Michalak.
 
The two teams could never separate from each other again in the second set. The two teams continued to trade points and the teams found themselves right where they started tied, 23-23. Each team fought off set points and Southeast Missouri won the final two points after back-to-back kills by Ochs and Malloy to take the set 28-26.
 
Halfway through the third set and the teams were all square at 16-16 apiece. But the Redhawks scored nine of the last 14 points to take the third set, 25-20, and take a 2-1 lead.
 
The final set was all SEMO and the Redhawks took the set 25-14 to win the match in four sets.
 
Wilkins led the way for the Colonels with 15 kills. Michalak and Mikayla Logan each chipped in 11 kills and 10 digs respectfully.
 
Malloy again led the way for Southeast Missouri with a game-best 21 kills. Colby Green chipped in 15 kills of her own.
 
Eastern hits the court a week from today when the Colonels travel to take on Tennessee Tech in Cookeville. First serve is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.
