Colonels Tie It In The Fifth, But Fall At UK

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky overcame a 3-0 deficit to tie the game in the fifth inning, but Kentucky earned a 6-3 victory on Tuesday at Kentucky Proud Park.

Down 3-0, Brent Lovell started the fourth inning with a single to right.  He scored on a two-out single to right by Max Williams to get the Colonels (2-5) on the board.

Logan Thomason led off the top of the fifth with a double to left and Daniel Harris IV followed with a walk.  Both runners moved up on a passed ball.  With one out, Thomason scored on a wild pitch.  Lovell followed with a sacrifice fly to shallow center field.  Harris slid head-first over the plate to tie the game 3-3.

John Rhodes, the second batter in the bottom of the fifth, put Kentucky back on top with a two-run home run over the wall in right field.  The Wildcats (5-0) added an insurance run in the sixth.

Thomason finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.  Lovell went 1-for-2 with a walk, a run and an RBI.  Freshman right-hander Garret Simpson struck out five batters in two innings.  Freshman lefty Bryce Travis pitched a scoreless eighth inning with a strike out.  Redshirt sophomore Brandon Thomas struck out two in a perfect ninth inning.
Rhodes had a 2-for-3 day with two runs and two RBIs for UK.  Cole Daniels (1-0) picked up the win after pitching three scoreless innings in relief and striking out seven.

The Colonels will play at East Tennessee this weekend.  The series opens on Friday with a single game at 3 p.m.  Saturday's doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
