RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University softball team fell to nationally ranked Kentucky, 12-4, on Wednesday night at Gertrude Hood Field.
The Wildcats struck first in the top of the first.

Kayla Kowalik got things started with a single up the middle. After a ground out and a strikeout, Lauren Johnson doubled down the left field line to score Kowalik and give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Renee Abernathy followed with a two-run home to left field to give Kentucky a 3-0 advantage after the top of the first.

The Colonels (25-10) answered back in the bottom half of the inning.

Sammi Miller got things started with a single up the middle on the first pitch she would see.
Carly Robinson worked a walk to put runners on first and second with one out.
Zoe Mihalicz tied it up with one swing of the bat, hitting her first home run of the season to dead center field to make it 3-3.

Kentucky (29-8) answered back with three more in the top of the second on a three-run home run by Tatum Spangler

Abernathy hit her second home run of the game in the top of the third to extend the Wildcat lead to 7-3.

Miller cut into the Wildcat lead with a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the fifth.

Miller went 2-for-2 with one home run and one RBI on the contest. Mihalicz went 1-for-3 with one home run and three RBIs.

Eastern hits the road this weekend for big three-game series at first-place Southeast Missouri State starting on Saturday. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 1 p.m.
