BOONE, N.C. – Eastern Kentucky fell behind 2-0 before winning two straight sets to force a fifth, but came up short in a 3-2 loss on Friday to Appalachian State.
 
ASU took the first two sets by identical 26-24 scores.  The Colonels won the third 25-17 and the fourth 25-19.  The Mountaineers won the fifth 15-11.
 
Sarah Mitchell totaled 15 kills and 18 digs for Eastern Kentucky (0-1).  
Mikayla Logan added 14 kills while hitting .400 for the night.  
Molly Michalak had 15 kills and 18 digs.  Newcomer 
Hannah Keating finished with 10 kills, a .300 percentage and three blocks.

Taylor Grinley led all players with 50 assists while 
Sydney Schoen had a match-best 21 digs.
 
Eastern Kentucky had 61 kills as a team while holding Appalachian State to 52 and out-hit the home team .236 to .154.  However, the Colonels made 14 service errors while the Mountaineers had eight.
 
McCall Denny led ASU with 12 kills.
 
EKU took a 24-23 lead in the first set on a kill by Logan, but Appalachian State scored three straight to take the set.  A kill by Keating tied the second set 24-24 before the Mountaineers scored two straight to take the 2-0 lead. 
 
The Colonels never trailed in the third set, jumping out to a 5-1 lead.  After ASU closed within three, 17-14, EKU ended the set on an 8-3 run.  A kill by Lulu Ambrose put the Mountaineers on top 3-2 in the fourth set before a 9-1 run gave control to Eastern Kentucky.
 
EKU jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the fifth but this time Appalachian State rallied to take control.  The Mountaineers scored five straight for a 6-3 lead.  An ASU attack error got Eastern Kentucky withing one, 10-9, before App State scores five of the final seven for the win.
 
The Colonels will close out play at the Appalachian Invitational on Saturday against North Carolina-Greensboro at 10 a.m. and Radford at 4 p.m.
