MT. PLEASANT, S.C.– Eastern Kentucky University's beach volleyball team lost a pair of matches on the opening day at the College of Charleston Beach Classic.
 
The Colonels (0-5) fell in the opening match, 3-2, to in-state rival Morehead State before falling to the host College of Charleston, 4-0.
 
In match one, the number four pairing of Elizabeth Fonvielle and Maddy Campbell got the Colonels on the board winning in straight sets, 21-13 and 21-19.
 
The first three pairing all went three sets, setting up some late match excitement.
 
Paityn Walker and Sarah Mitchell in the number two pairing fell behind early losing the first set, 21-19. But the duo answered back in a big way storming back to take the last two sets, 21-15 and 15-11, to win the points for the Colonels and give them a 2-1 lead.
 
Morehead State took the final two matches in three sets to win the match against the Colonels.
 
In match two, the number one pairing of Shannon Stone and Hannah Keating fell behind early losing the first set, 21-18. The duo answered back taking the second set over Charleston, 21-15, to even the match at 1-1. Charleston took the final set, 15-10, to win the point.
 
Walker and Mitchell were tied 1-1 but did not finish the match.
 
The Colonels wrap up the College of Charleston Beach Classic on Sunday against Florida Gulf Coast and Coastal Carolina. First serve against FGCU is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.
