RICHMOND, Ky. – EKU held its first scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday afternoon at
Roy Kidd Stadium as the Colonels prepare for the season opener on Sept. 2 at Eastern Michigan
"I think it was a good ebb and flow of our football team," head coach
Walt Wells said of the scrimmage. "The offense came out hot, the defense came back and got some stops and did some good things. I thought we tackled well for really our first live tackling situation, not a lot of missed tackles. We ran the ball better than we have been in practice, so I thought that was good to see. We'll see where we're at as we move forward, but I really like where we're at right now."
EKU's offense opened the scrimmage with a scoring drive as a diving catch by
Joeseph Sewell at the two-yard line set up a rushing touchdown by
Braedon Sloan. The defense forced a three-and-out on the ensuing drive before the offense struck back as
Parker McKinney found
Jayden Higgins over the middle for a 26-yard touchdown.
Following the touchdown pass, EKU's defense seized control, forcing six consecutive punts. The offense got back on the board when
Cameron Hergott connected down the home sideline to
Mo Edwards Jr. for a 50-yard score. Pinned at the one-yard line for its next drive, the offense hit its biggest play of the day when Higgins hauled in a deep pass from McKinney and raced 99 yards for a touchdown.
In the second half, Welch and
Patrick Nations each converted a 49-yard field goal attempt and the defense recorded its first turnover of the day when a hit from
Kimwanga Mafuta forced a fumble that
Harold McKay Jr. recovered. Nations capped the scoring with a 52-yard field goal.
