EKU Comes From Behind For Road Win At Marshall

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. –
After falling behind 1-0, Eastern Kentucky won three straight sets to beat Marshall 3-1 on Tuesday in Huntington, West Virginia.
 
EKU won by scores of 21-25, 26-24, 25-22 and 25-15.
 
Sarah Mitchell led Eastern Kentucky with 15 kills.  She also had 15 digs and three aces.  Molly Michalak contributed 12 kills and 21 digs.  The junior recorded her 500th career dig during the match. 
 
Four players had 10 or more digs with Josie Schmitendorf posting 15 digs and Chloe Mason adding 11.  Mason also had four aces.  Miya Carmichael had a team-high 21 assists.
 
The Colonels were down just one, 13-12, in the first set after a kill from Michalak.  However the Thundering Herd went on a 6-2 run to take control.  EKU got within three late, 24-21, but a kill from Macy McElhaney finished it off for Marshall.
 
A kill from Essence Clerkley in the second set gave the Herd a 20-17 edge, but this time Eastern Kentucky turned the tied with a 6-2 run.  Mitchell's kill capped it and put the visitors ahead 23-22.  The Colonels had set-point at 24-23 after a kill from Maddy Campbell.  Marshall scored to tie it before Mitchell ended it on her own.  The junior recorded a kill for another set-point and then served up an ace to tie the match 1-1.
 
An 8-1 EKU run in the fourth turned a 6-5 lead into a 14-6 advantage.  Mitchell's ace finished off the spurt.  Carson Ledford's kill made it 18-9 before the Thundering Herd staged a late comeback.  A 10-1 run allowed the home squad to tie it, 19-19.  However, Eastern Kentucky responded by scoring five of the next six to reach set-point, 24-20.  Mitchell and Katie McKune had two kills each in the run.  After Marshall scored two straight, Mitchell ended it with a kill.
 
The Colonels scored the first five points of the fourth set and took a 10-4 lead on a kill from Mitchell and a Marshall attack error.  Mason's ace staked EKU to a 15-8 lead.  A kill from McKune and another Herd error extended the margin to nine, 20-11.  Michalak's kill and Marshall's sixth error of the set ended the match.
 
Eastern Kentucky finished with 61 kills, compared to 51 for the Thundering Herd.  EKU held a 10-2 advantage in aces.
 
McElhaney led Marshall with 20 kills and a .333 attack percentage.
 
The Colonels continue a stretch of three straight road matches at Central Arkansas on Friday.  First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and the match will air live on ESPN+.
