RICHMOND, Ky. – In an Atlantic Sun Conference volleyball rematch, third place Eastern Kentucky University knocked off second place Lipscomb, 3-2, on Saturday at Baptist Health Arena. The Bisons had edged the Colonels 3-2 on Oct. 6 in Nashville.
After falling behind 2-1 in the match, EKU (18-6, 8-4 ASUN) stayed alive by winning the fourth set 25-20. Lipscomb (15-7, 10-2 ASUN) scored the first point of the set, but that was its only lead. The Colonels scored the next two, on a pair of kills from
AG Vandagriff, and led the rest of the set. A kill from
Paige Wagers put the home team on top 15-10. The Bisons closed to within one late, 21-20, on a kill from Courtney Jones. However, EKU scored the final four points to take the set and tie the match. Vandagriff finished it off with a kill.
The Colonels hit .355 in the fourth set while holding Lipscomb to a .118 attack percentage.
EKU maintained that momentum early in the fifth set, jumping out to a 4-2 lead on a block from Wagers and Vandagriff. The Bisons answered with a 6-1 run. Back-to-back attack errors put the visitors ahead 8-5. The Colonels came right back with a run of their own, scoring eight unanswered. A service ace from
Kambree Lucas tied it 8-8. Two more aces from Lucas put EKU on top 11-8. A kill from
Sarah Mitchell and a Lipscomb error finished off the run and staked the Colonels to a 13-8 advantage. After a point from the Bisons, EKU scored the final to two to take the set, 15-9, and the match.
Mitchell had 18 kills and 17 digs. She made just four errors in 46 attempts and hit .304 for the match. Vandagriff had 13 kills, only two errors, a. 423 hitting percentage and four blocks. Wagers finished with nine kills and five blocks. Lucas had five aces and two blocks.
EKU out-hit Lipscomb .260 to .212, making 10 fewer errors. The Colonels had a 13-9 edge in blocks and served up three more aces, 11-8.
Meg Mersman had 18 kills and five blocks for Lipscomb.
An ace from
Chloe Mason allowed EKU to break an 18-18 tie in the first set on its way to taking the opener 25-21. With the second set tied 22-22, the Bisons scored three straight to win it 25-22 and tie the match 1-1. Lipscomb led by as many as seven, 17-10, in the third set before the Colonels closed to within two, 22-20, on a kill by Mitchell. The Bisons held on for a 25-21 win and a 2-1 lead in the match.
EKU will hit the road for two matches next weekend, starting at Central Arkansas on Friday at 7 p.m. ET.
