Colonels Fall At No. 16 Kentucky

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky University took a 3-2 lead into the seventh against No. 16 Kentucky, but couldn't hold off a Wildcat comeback in a 9-3 loss on Tuesday at Kentucky Proud Park.

The Colonels step back into ASUN Conference play on Friday at Kennesaw State.  The series opener is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

EKU didn't record its first hit until the fifth inning, but once it did the Colonels put up a big inning.  Roderick Criss II was hit by a pitch and DJ Sullivan singled to start the inning and chase UK starter Travis Smith.  With one out, Hayden Duffield plated the first run with a double to left.  Logan Thomason followed with a two run single up the middle to give the Colonels a 3-2 lead.

Kentucky (19-2) staged a seventh inning comeback.  With one on and no outs, Devin Burkes hit a 2-run home run over the wall in left center to swing the lead in the Wildcats favor, 4-3.  Chase Stanke added a RBI double later in the inning.  UK put four more runs on the board in the eighth.

Freshman Gavin Faulkner, pitching in his hometown, provided one and one-third innings of scoreless relief for the Colonels (8-12).  He did not allow a hit and struck out two.
