Colonels Split Doubleheader to Open Series at North Alabama

FLORENCE, Ala. – The Eastern Kentucky softball team (16-16, 1-7 ASUN) carried a no-hit bid through four innings and a late rally to overcome North Alabama (20-9, 2-6 ASUN), 3-2, in game one, and fell in five innings in game two, 8-0, on Saturday night at Hilda B. Anderson Softball Stadium.
 
With Saturday's results, EKU returns to even on the season at 16-16.
 
Junior Madison Scott led EKU going 2-for-3 from the plate and a double, her career-high total for hits in a single game.
 
Vianna Barron propelled the Colonels going 1-for-4 with two runs batted in to tie the game at two.
 
Three other Colonels gathered a hit in Saturday's contest, including junior Bella Sanchez who got her first hit of the 2023 campaign.
 
Freshman Brooke Davis earned the win to move to 4-4 on the season, tossing a complete game with five hits, two runs, and one strikeout.
 
Game One: EKU 3, UNA 2
Davis and EKU's stellar defensive effort shined through the first four innings in game one of Saturday's doubleheader. The Oakdale, Calif. native carried a no-hit bid and two 1-2-3 innings in the first four frames.
 
North Alabama opened its scoring in the bottom of the fifth with a leadoff homer, two additional singles brought another runner in to take both teams into the sixth inning, 2-0.
 
Scott kicked off the top of the sixth with a double, followed by a Maggie Pertee double off the right field fence to put both runners in scoring position. Barron singled down the left field line in the next at bat to equalize the game two all. Bowers ended the inning bringing Barron in off an error by the UNA shortstop to take the lead 3-2.
 
Davis' pitching effort shined again in the bottom of the inning, tossing her third 1-2-3 inning of the game.
 
EKU singled twice more in the top of the seventh from Sanchez and Scott, her second hit of the contest.
 
UNA would muster a hit in the bottom of the seventh with two out, but were unable to scratch the tying run across to end game one of the series in EKU's favor, 3-2.
 
Game Two: UNA 8, EKU 0 (5 inn.)
Sophomore Lauren Narvaez earned her 17th starting nod of the season in game two against the Lions, UNA brought in runs in the bottom of the first and third to take the early 3-0 lead. 
 
The Lions scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth off two errors and two singles to claim game two against EKU in five innings, 8-0.
 
Freshman Jaelin Haynes put up EKU's lone hit in 16 at bats.
 
Next Up
EKU return to action tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. against North Alabama in the series finale, seeking its first ASUN Conference road series victory since April 24, 2022 at Bellarmine.
