RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat No. 15 Florida Gulf Coast, 8-7, and clinch the ASUN Conference series in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday.
EKU won the series opener on Friday 17-6. The Eagles won the second game of Saturday's doubleheader 23-7. FGCU entered the weekend with only two conference losses all season. The Colonels handed the first-place Eagles two in back-to-back games.
Trailing 7-4 entering the bottom of the ninth inning of game one,
Charlie Ludwick made it a two-run game when he started the frame with a solo home run. A single, a walk and a ground rule double brought in another run and had runners on second and third with no outs. FGCU closer LJ McDonough struck out the next batter and got a pop up for the second out. The Eagles couldn't do anything on a perfect dribbler down the third base line by
Logan Thomason and
Jalen Jones scored to tie the game.
Miguel Larreal beat the throw on a ground ball in the hole at second to bring home
DJ Sullivan for the walk-off win.
Florida Gulf Coast started the game by scoring five runs in the first inning, and went in front 7-2 in the sixth.
Santiago Peralta's RBI single and Thomason's run-scoring double in the bottom half of the sixth got the Colonels within three, 7-4.
Thomason and Larreal had three hits each. Thomason drove in three runs and scored once. Ludwick was 2-for-4 with a walk, a run and two RBIs. Sullivan scored twice, drove in one and finished 2-for-5.
After drawing 15 walks in the series opener on Friday, EKU had six more in game two of the series to go along with 14 hits.
The Eagles scored four runs in the first inning and hit five home runs in the game to cruise to a victory in the second game of the doubleheader.
Ludwick hit a two-run home run and
Roderick Criss II finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored for the Colonels (15-20, 6-9 ASUN). Jones had a two-run home run as well, going 1-for-1 with two walks, a run and two RBIs.
Mac Moise hit two home runs and drove in five runs for Florida Gulf Coast (27-9, 11-4 ASUN).
EKU will host Marshall on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
