RICHMOND, Ky. – Avenging a midweek loss from last season, EKU softball (23-19, 5-10 ASUN) takes two against in-state Morehead State (11-21, 6-9 OVC) on Wednesday night at Gertrude Hood Field.
EKU claimed game one by a close score of 5-4 and swept the Eagles in game two, 8-0, in five innings.
The Colonels were led by junior
Jeanay Riley, who went 2-for-4 from the plate with a 2-run home run in game one. The Louisville, Ky. product hit in a season-high three runs.
Vianna Barron went a perfect 3-for-3 in game one with two RBIs.
Jasmine Miller and
Madison Scott followed with two hits apiece.
Freshman
Brooke Davis earned the win in relief, tossing four innings with three strikeouts to move to 7-4 on the season.
EKU totaled 18 hits in 12 innings over the two games, including two doubles, two triples, and two home runs.
The Colonels also recorded a season-high 411 fans in attendance in the first game.
Game One: EKU 5, Morehead State 4
Sophomore
Lauren Narvaez was selected for her 21st start of the season, ending the first two frames with two strikeouts.
The Colonels got two hits in the bottom of the second from Barron and Miller, EKU ended the inning with three consecutive fielder's choices, stranding runners in scoring position.
Morehead State kicked off the third inning with a solo shot that landed on the roof of the indoor softball complex by catcher Emily Williams. Williams ended game one going a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate with two runs and two runs batted in.
EKU responded in the bottom half of the innings with its own 2-run homer from
Jeanay Riley, her fourth of the season to give EKU a 2-1 lead.
The Eagles plated two runs off three hits in the bottom of the fifth, taking a 3-2 lead over the Colonels.
In the bottom half of the inning, Riley doubled down the right field line to equalize the game at three all. Barron would end the inning with a single to the left gap, scoring Riley and
Jaelin Haynes for a 5-3 lead.
Davis allowed a run in the top of the seventh but closed the inning with a baserunning mishap by MSU and a foul out to first for her seventh win of the season.
Game Two: EKU 8, Morehead State 0 (5 innings)
Freshman
Emma Bethel earned nod No. 8 of the season, facing the same lineup from game one that totaled nine hits.
EKU opened the game with three runs in the first inning off a single from Riley and triple by
Maggie Pertee.
The Colonels padded their led by five runs in the bottom of the third off four hits and an error. Including a home run from
Lilly Davis and a triple from
Rylie Grantz.
The Colonels forced the eight-run mercy-rule in the middle of the fifth to move to 4-2 on the season against in-state opponents in midweek games.
Bethel ended her eighth start of the season tossing a five-inning complete game allowing two hits and striking out two Eagle batters. She moves to 4-2 on the season from the circle.

EKU continues its home stand on Saturday and Sunday with ASUN Conference foe Jacksonville State in Alumni Weekend at the ballpark. The program anticipates 70+ former Colonels in attendance as the team makes its push for the 2023 ASUN Championship field.
