RICHMOND, Ky.  Eastern Kentucky University Vice President and Director of Athletics Matt Roan has been appointed to the NCAA Division I Council. Roan's four-year appointment begins on August 1 and runs through June of 2027. As part of his role on the NCAA Division I Council, Roan will also serve as a member of the NCAA Division I Football Oversight Committee.

The Division I Council is a high-level group responsible for the day-to-day decision-making for Division I. The Council is comprised of one representative from each of the 32 Division I conferences, plus several at-large representatives, and is the chief legislative body of the Division.

"I'm incredibly honored to be appointed to the NCAA Division I Council," Roan said. "I am privileged to represent the ASUN Conference and Eastern Kentucky University during such a pivotal time in college athletics as we work to improve Division I. I'm similarly grateful for the opportunity to serve on the FOC. As a product of the student-athlete experience, I believe in the value and impact of college athletics. I look forward to advocating for the best interests of student-athletes alongside great colleagues."

Roan, who is in his third year as athletics director at EKU, directs EKU's 18-sport NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics program. In the last three years, Roan has presided over an individual national championship in men's track and field and five outright or shared conference titles. EKU has had 141 All-Conference performers, nine conference Players of the Year, five conference Coach of the Year awards, and 71 All-Academic honors. The Colonels have also excelled in the classroom, extending the department's streak to 23 consecutive semesters with a 3.0 grade point average. EKU has won three Scholar of the Year honors and has seen 60 student-athletes honored at the conference, district, and national levels for their academic performances.

Under Roan's leadership, EKU has secured naming partnerships for CG Bank Field at Roy Kidd Stadium and Baptist Health Arena and is undergoing a $31 million renovation of Alumni Coliseum.

Roan has served as a member of the NCAA Division I Football Championship Committee for two different conferences, serving as the Southland Conference's representative in 2019 and representing the ASUN-WAC alliance since 2021.
