EKU Breaks Program Record For Sweeps With Win At Winthrop

Box Score

ROCK HILL, S.C. –
The volleyball team broke the program record with its seventh straight sweep, a 3-0 victory at Winthrop on Friday at the Winthrop Invitational.

The stretch of seven straight matches without losing a set broke the mark of six, which was accomplished in 1987, 1990 and 2004.  It was also the Colonels' eighth straight win, their longest winning streak since putting together 13 straight victories in 2004.

Kambree Lucas had a match-best 10 kills to go along with 11 digs, three aces and two blocks for EKU (9-2).  AG Vandagriff recorded eight kills with a .400 attack percentage.  Carson Ledford had a team-high four blocks.  Josie Schmitendorf finished with 13 digs and one ace.  Freshman Emilee Hill led the squad with 15 assists and had five kills, six digs and three blocks.

After a back-and-forth start to the first set, the Colonels broke a 5-5 tie by scoring three straight and five of the next six.  A kill from Paige Wagers and an Eagle error put the visitors ahead 10-6.  Ledford's kill made it 15-9.  A Vandagriff kill pushed the lead to seven, 22-15.  Ledford finished it off with a kill for a 25-16 win.

With the second set tied 14-14, EKU rolled off a 5-1 run to build a cushion.  A kill by Lucas followed by a Winthrop error put the Colonels ahead 19-15.  The Eagles battled back to tie it three times, the final time at 24-24.  However, Lucas followed with a kill and Schmitendorf served up an ace to end the set 26-24.

The Eagles cut a six-point deficit in half in the third set, getting within three, 20-17, on an EKU attack error.  That is as close as the home team would get.  The Colonels scored five of the final six to secure the win.  A kill by Lucas ended the set at 25-18.

Karli Shepherd posted a team-best eight kills for Winthrop (0-10).

The Colonels will wrap up play in the Winthrop Invitational on Saturday against Virginia Commonwealth at 2 p.m.
