RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University football team will venture to the Rocky Mountains this Saturday to face Southern Utah in EKU's second United Athletic Conference game this season.
Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. ET at Eccles Coliseum in Cedar City, Utah. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and simulcast on WCYO 100.7 FM, with Greg Stotelmyer, Jim Tirey, and Wes Chandler on the call.
The Colonels will look to play the role of spoiler this Saturday and build on its three-game win streak, while SUU will be celebrating homecoming and bounce back from a 38-37 overtime loss to Tarleton State last week.
EKU (3-2, 1-0) and the Thunderbirds (2-4,1-1) have only met one time before Saturday with the Colonels taking a 35-28 win in 2022.
The Colonels
EKU enters Saturday's showdown fresh off an open week, riding a three-game win streak.
Over the last three games, the Colonels have outscored opponents 99-27 finding a groove on both sides of the ball.
During the winning streak quarterback
Matt Morrissey has thrown for 704 yards and six touchdowns with an efficiency rating of 161.5.
His favorite target in that time has been
Dequan Stanley who has notched nine receptions for 169 yards and three touchdowns.
On the ground the Maroon and White have rushed for 631 yards averaging 5.1 yards a carry. Running back
Joshua Carter has led the charge rushing for 250 yards and four touchdowns in the previous three games.
Defensively, the Colonels have been on a tear lately holding FCS opponents to an average of just nine points a game and have forced five turnovers as well.
On the season, the defense has allowed an average of just 351.4 total yards per game, the second-best mark in the UAC this year. This also represents a 125-yard improvement compared to last season, when the Colonels allowed 476.4 yards per game.
Scouting the Thunderbirds
Southern Utah is looking to find an answer after a narrow loss to nationally ranked Tarleton State just a week ago.
The Thunderbirds will look to running back Targhee Lambson who is third in the nation in rushing yards with 928 on the season and nine touchdowns.
Through the air quarterback Bronson Barron has thrown for 749 yards and six touchdowns.
On the other side, SUU has hallowed 31.7 points per game, and 434.3 yards of total offense per game, something the Colonel offense will look to exploit.
