Colonels Take Lead Midway Through Second Half At Clemson, But Can't Hold Off ACC Tigers

Box Score

CLEMSON, S.C. –
Mayar Wol's 3-pointer from the right wing gave Eastern Kentucky University a 54-50 lead with 12:50 left in the game at Clemson, but the Tigers staged a comeback for a 75-62 victory on Tuesday at Littlejohn Coliseum.

After Wol gave the Colonels (2-1) the 4-point lead, Del Jones answered with a 3-pointer out of a timeout on the other end.  Jones came up with a steal on the ensuing in-bounds pass and Ian Schieffelin connected on a layup to put Clemson up 55-54.  Those baskets began a 21-2 run that allowed the Tigers (3-0) to pull away.

Devontae Blanton led all players with 23 points for EKU.  He hit 10-of-15 from the field, grabbed six rebounds and had a steal.  Wol finished with 12 points and six boards.

The Colonels held Clemson to 28 percent shooting from 3-point range (7-for-25) and 14.5 points below its season average.  The Tigers came into the game having hit on 48 percent from deep and averaging 89.5 points.

A 12-3 run allowed Clemson to turn a 1-point lead into a 10-point advantage, going up 23-13 on Chase Hunter's triple with 12:33 showing on the clock in the first half.  However, the Colonels answered with 12 straight.  George Kimble III got the run started with a 3-pointer.  Blanton had a jumper in the lane and a three from the top of the key.  Cyril Martynov put the visitors in front 25-23 with a layup at the 9:08 mark.

Viktor Lakhin put an end to Clemson's 4-minute scoring drought with a tip-in with 8:32 to play in the opening period.  A pair of free throws by Jones had the Tigers back up by eight, 37-29.  It appeared EKU would go to the locker room down just three after Montavious Myrick hit a free throw with less than three seconds to go, but Chauncey Wiggins nailed a 3-pointer from the top of the key as time expired to make it a 6-point game, 42-36, at the break.

EKU scored the first six points of the second half to erase the deficit.  Blanton had four of the six, including a jumper that tied it at 42-42.  Down four, 48-44, the Colonels scored 10 of the next 12.  Turner Buttry started it with a jumper.  Martynov hit a layup and a free throw.  Blanton's baseline jumper preceded the 3-pointer from Wal that gave the visitors a 54-50 lead.

Hunter and Lakhin finished with 19 points each for the Tigers.  Lakhin also had 12 rebounds and three blocks.

After allowing 14 offensive rebounds to Clemson in the first half, EKU gave up just five in the second.

The Colonels will have a week off of game action until playing at Chicago State on Tuesday, Nov. 19.  Tipoff in the Windy City is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
